Planning a Repast in Metro Detroit: Where to Start

A calm, step-by-step guide to the venue, guest count, budget and meal after a funeral.

If you are planning a repast after a funeral, you do not have to settle every detail at once. Begin with the decisions that shape the rest of the gathering: where it will happen, approximately how many people will eat and who can help.

1. Choose one coordinator

Select a family member or trusted friend to keep the details together. They can collect menu choices, confirm times with the venue and pass updates to the caterer. Write down a backup contact so the family is not dependent on one person on the day.

2. Confirm the venue and timing

For a church hall, event space or family home in Detroit, Southfield or a surrounding community, confirm the meal time and the earliest vendor access. Ask about outside catering, seating, parking, accessibility, kitchen use and cleanup responsibilities. Leave room in the schedule for travel from the service.

3. Set a working guest count and budget

Estimate who will attend the meal rather than using the service attendance alone. Decide what the budget needs to cover: food, delivery, setup, paper products, drinks, venue costs and any serving help. Ask for an itemized quote so you can compare the same services.

4. Choose a manageable menu

Start with a main dish and a few sides. Confirm dietary needs with the family and discuss ingredients directly with the caterer. Use our guide to repast food quantities to prepare your questions, then confirm portions against the menu you select.

5. Confirm each person's responsibilities

  • Who opens the venue and meets the delivery?
  • Who provides drinks, ice and paper products?
  • Who sets out food and helps guests?
  • Who handles cleanup and any remaining food?
  • Who is the contact if the service runs late?

6. Put the final plan in one place

Keep the venue contact, caterer's confirmation, guest count, menu, payment details and day-of assignments together. Our planning resources include a free checklist and optional digital tools for organizing the details.
